Curriculum Newsletter – September

Welcome to your first term in 4H. I am really looking forward to getting to know you better and seeing the progress you are going to make throughout the year.

Every day

Children must bring their book bag, reading book, reading record and home reading journal to school. Children are allowed to bring their own pencil case if they would like but all resources will be provided by school if not. Accelerated Reader books need to be read EVERY night for at least 20 minutes and notes must be made in home reading journals.  Reading records must also be signed every evening.

Literacy:

This term we are going to cover a range of text types and work on paragraph and sentence structure.  We are going to have a weekly lesson on punctuation and grammar which will help the children to improve their writing overall. Our first literacy topic will see us learn about information books where we will be writing our own information texts on Volcanoes (our geography topic).

Maths:

This half term we are covering a wide range of topics around number and calculation strategies. Your child must know up to their 12 times tables and be able to rapidly recall these. If they find this a challenge, come and have a chat about some of the ways that you can help them to learn them.

Science:

We will be learning about states of matter for our first science topic.  The lessons will include some practical work where children will be working in groups to use their investigation skills.  The children will gain a greater understanding this year of methods of scientific enquiry.

Topic:

In Geography we will be learning about volcanoes. Our learning will focus on how volcanoes are formed, what causes them to erupt and the effect volcanoes have on the weather.  We shall be carrying out some exciting investigations where we will be making our own volcanoes erupt!

PSHE:

Our PSHE topic is new beginnings. This will link into our other units but will include creating a class charter, carrying out some team building activities and thinking about managing the feelings that come with a new beginning.

Communicating with parents.

Please feel free to explore the year 4 class blog where you will see work that the children have been doing and any important messages.  If you have any questions or problems, please do feel free to see me at the end of the day or arrange an after school meeting.

PE Kit

Children have PE on a Thursday so please ensure your child remembers to bring the correct change of clothes. Children will need a plain t-shirt (not their school uniform) and plain shorts or trousers. We kindly request no football shirts. Trainers will be required for these lessons. Swimming is on a Tuesday afternoon at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.  Boys must have speedo style swimming trunks and a towel and girls must wear a swimming hat and one piece costume.  Please note that no jewellery, including earrings, is allowed in the pool.

Homework

The children will get an activity to complete in their homework book on Thursday. They will then have until Tuesday to complete this. They are able to hand it in earlier if they complete it earlier. The children have their own spelling books and will have a list of spellings to learn each week.  Their tests will be on Tuesday mornings and they will receive new spellings on a Wednesday. Homework must be completed and handed in on time to a good standard. Feedback will be given on areas of strength and development.

Questions

If you have any questions or concerns during the year, please do arrange to come and meet with me.
